About The Record:

The Art of Falling Apart, by Soft Cell, released in 1983, is a darker, more experimental follow-up to their debut album, exploring themes of emotional turmoil, societal decay, and personal struggle through a blend of synth-pop and cabaret influences. The album, produced by Mike Thorne, marked a shift from the duo’s earlier commercial sound, reflecting tensions between Marc Almond and Dave Ball, as well as their growing disillusionment with fame. Despite its critical acclaim for its raw honesty and innovative production, it was less commercially successful than their debut, partly due to its bleak tone and the band’s internal conflicts. Historically significant as Soft Cell’s second album, it captured the early 1980s’ post-punk and new wave evolution, though it signaled the beginning of the duo’s initial breakup. The album’s notable singles include Where the Heart Is and Numbers, with the former achieving moderate chart success in the UK.
