About The Record:
Modern Art, by Art Farmer, is a pivotal jazz album showcasing a quintet featuring Benny Golson on tenor saxophone and Bill Evans on piano. The album, praised for its classy and tasteful inventiveness, serves as a prelude to Farmer’s later work with Golson in the Jazztet, earning a five-star rating from DownBeat in 1958. Its historical significance lies in capturing Farmer’s lyrical style and the early synergy of the Farmer-Golson partnership, foreshadowing their influential contributions to modern jazz. The Penguin Guide to Jazz hailed it as one of Farmer’s most successful records, particularly noting Evans’ contributions. No specific hit singles from Modern Art are documented, as jazz albums from this era typically emphasized full compositions over chart-topping tracks.
