The single was an international success; it reached No. 1 on charts in the US, Canada, Norway, Mexico, and Singapore. It also reached No. 1 on the US Adult Contemporary, Easy Listening, Hot 100, and the Cashbox Top 100 Charts. According to Billboard magazine, it sold over 2 million copies. The record, as well as the writer Bacharach, won an Oscar for Best Original Song.
