About The Record:

Vintage Dead, by Grateful Dead, released in 1971 by Sunflower Records, capturing performances from 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The album showcases the band’s early psychedelic sound, blending blues, folk, and rock, with tracks like I Know You Rider and Dancing in the Street reflecting their improvisational energy. Historically significant as one of the earliest live recordings of the band, it provides a snapshot of their formative years before they achieved mainstream fame. However, Vintage Dead was released without the band’s approval, leading to legal disputes with the label, which adds to its controversial legacy. The album did not produce any hit singles, as the Grateful Dead’s early work was more focused on live performances than commercial radio success.
