About The Record:
Music Inspired By Watership Down, by Bo Hansson, is a progressive rock instrumental work built around musical ideas drawn from Richard Adams' heroic fantasy novel of the same name, marking the artist's second literary concept album after his breakthrough with Tolkien's work. The Swedish release bore the title El-Ahrairah, referencing the novel's trickster rabbit deity known as the Prince with a Thousand Enemies, while the international version incorporated poetic excerpts from figures like John Keats and Alexander Pope rather than direct narrative ties. It features dynamic, energetic passages with session musicians contributing guitar and other elements, distinguishing it through a sense of momentum compared to some of Hansson's earlier atmospheric efforts, and includes tracks such as Born In The Gentle South and The Twice-Victory that capture the story's themes of survival and triumph. A unique bonus track on later reissues, the live-in-studio Migration Suite, showcases freewheeling improvisation appreciated by dedicated fans. As Hansson's final major international release, it holds historical significance as the close of his prominent 1970s progressive phase before a lengthy career hiatus.
