About The Record:

Revue: I Want My Girl (12" Single), by Jesse Johnson, released in 1985 on A&M Records, is a key release from his debut album Revue, showcasing the Minneapolis sound with its funky, synth-driven R&B style. This single features the track I Want My Girl, a smooth, romantic R&B ballad that became a notable hit, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 76 on the Hot 100. Historically, the release is significant as it marked Johnson’s emergence as a solo artist after leaving The Time, a band tied to Prince’s influential Purple Rain era, highlighting his ability to carry the Minneapolis funk legacy forward. The 12" single format, popular in the 1980s, included extended and remixed versions, catering to club DJs and amplifying its dancefloor appeal. Alongside I Want My Girl, other hit singles from the parent album Revue include Be Your Man and Can You Help Me, reinforcing Johnson’s chart success.
