About The Record:
The Wailing Dervishes by Herbie Mann is a live album that captures the jazz flautist blending his signature improvisational style with authentic Middle Eastern sounds in a fusion that remains rare and effective even decades later, featuring stellar support from oud virtuoso Chick Ganimian, percussionist Moulay "Ali" Hafid on dümbek, vibraphonist Roy Ayers, and a memorable guest appearance by bagpiper Rufus Harley. Recorded at the Village Theatre in New York City, the set stands out for its adventurous spirit and lack of commercial or ethnic compromises, making it an early and thrilling example of what would later be recognized as world music influences in jazz. Highlights include extended, hypnotic explorations like the title track and In the Medina, alongside a lengthy, psychedelic-tinged take on the Beatles' Norwegian Wood and the bluesy Flute Bag with its surprising bagpipes. The closing Armenian Lullaby adds a folk-like intimacy through Ganimian's contributions.
