About The Record:

Nona Hendryx, by Nona Hendryx, marks the artist's bold solo debut following the breakup of the groundbreaking trio Labelle. This self-titled album blends soul with hard rock influences, showcasing Hendryx's powerful vocals and adventurous songwriting in a genre-defying style that challenged conventions for Black female artists at the time. A unique aspect is the track Leaving Here Today, inspired by activist Angela Davis, adding a layer of political resonance. Notable songs include her dynamic cover of Winning, later popularized by Santana, as well as fan-appreciated tracks like Everybody Wants to Be Somebody and the ballad Leaving Here Today. Produced with a rock edge featuring blistering guitars and horns, the album highlighted Hendryx's daring shift toward rock-oriented sounds, earning praise for its innovative fusion despite limited initial recognition.
