About The Record:
Sundown reached No. 1 in the US on the pop chart, the only Gordon Lightfoot album to achieve this. In his native Canada, it topped the RPM 100 for five consecutive weeks. The album marked the pinnacle of Lightfoot's acoustic folk-country blend before he embarked on an increasing use of electronic instruments, although he did include some electric guitar, notably on the title track. As for singles, the title track reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 (No. 1 AC, No. 13 Country), while Carefree Highway reached No. 10 on the Hot 100 (No. 1 AC, No. 81 Country). The song Sundown's lyrics seem to describe a troubled romantic relationship, with the narrator recounting an affair with a "hard-loving woman [who's] got me feeling mean." There are rumours that Sundown was inspired by his then girlfriend, Cathy Smith, later more infamously known for her involvement in the death of John Belushi. Lightfoot has commented in interviews that she was "the one woman in my life who most hurt me." The song was prominently featured in the highly rated January 27, 2014 TV episode of The Blacklist.
