About The Record:

Uptown Is Kickin' It by Various Artists is a hip-hop compilation album that served as the debut release for the newly founded Uptown Records, showcasing its early roster collectively known as The Uptown Crew. This project holds historical significance as the inaugural effort from Andre Harrell's influential label, which would later become a powerhouse in blending hip-hop with R&B and launching stars in the new jack swing era. A unique aspect is its role in introducing Heavy D & The Boyz to a wider audience through their energetic remake of the classic Mr. Big Stuff. Fan-favorites include the title track Uptown Is Kickin' It by The Uptown Crew, which samples iconic breaks and features a promotional music video, as well as Marley Marl's scratching showcase He Cuts So Fresh. Other notable tracks are Bass Game by female duo Finesse & Synquis and Stress by Woody Rock, highlighting the label's diverse early talent.
