About The Record:

Jesus Was a Capricorn, by Kris Kristofferson, is a collection of introspective songs blending themes of religion, romance, and rough living with notable duets featuring Rita Coolidge on tracks like It Sure Was (Love) and Give It Time to Be Tender that previewed their future collaborative work. The title track Jesus Was a Capricorn (Owed to John Prine) pays homage to John Prine by borrowing melodic elements and portraying Christ as a sandal-wearing hippie while replying to critics of his prior work, showcasing Kristofferson's admiration for emerging songwriters. A unique highlight is the closing gospel-tinged Why Me, inspired by a personal moment of gratitude and humility after a religious experience, which became a country gospel standard covered by artists like Elvis Presley. Fan favorites also include Nobody Wins, later covered by Frank Sinatra on his comeback album, and the duet Help Me with Larry Gatlin. The album itself reached No. 1 on the country charts and the single Why Me hit No. 1 country and No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, both going gold for Kristofferson's greatest commercial success as a solo artist.
