About The Record:

The Act is a 1977 Broadway cast recording featuring Liza Minnelli as Michelle Craig, a fading film star attempting a comeback as a Las Vegas singer, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1977 after tryouts in Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, was tailored to showcase Minnelli’s dynamic performance style, earning her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Despite its $2 million advance ticket sales, a record at the time, the production struggled with Minnelli’s erratic behavior and frequent absences, leading to financial losses. The album captures Minnelli’s powerful belting in songs like City Lights, The Money Tree, and Arthur in the Afternoon. The score, arranged by Ralph Burns, reflects a 1970s aesthetic with themes of celebrity and personal struggle.
