About The Record:

The Sound of Music (Coronet) released in 1959 on Coronet Records, is a budget-line studio recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein's iconic Broadway musical, adapted from Maria von Trapp's memoir, featuring orchestral arrangements by Lewis Merritt and a children's chorus led by Michael Hoffmann. It includes key selections like The Sound of Music, My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Maria, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and Climb Ev'ry Mountain, performed by the Coronet Studio Orchestra and unidentified vocalists in a simple, accessible style. Released shortly after the musical's November 1959 Broadway debut, this LP is historically notable as an early commercial recording that helped popularize the score before the 1965 film's massive success, which sold over 20 million soundtrack copies and won five Oscars, including Best Picture. As part of Premier Albums' low-cost Coronet imprint, it reflects the 1950s trend of affordable Broadway LPs that broadened access to musical theater for middle-class audiences. No hit singles were released from this album, though its tracks gained widespread recognition through later covers and the official soundtrack.
