About The Record:
The Chicago Theme by Hubert Laws, is a jazz-funk outing that showcases the flautist's superb playing amid strings and a funky rhythm section featuring luminaries like Bob James on keyboards, George Benson and Eric Gale on guitars, Stanley Clarke and Ron Carter on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, the album blends commercial grooves with soul-jazz energy in a style reminiscent of a 1970s cop show soundtrack, including a cover of Midnight at the Oasis and the Stylistics hit You Make Me Feel Brand New alongside originals like Going Home, I Had a Dream, and the energetic Inflation Chaser. The title track, written by Bob James, stands out as a fan-favorite and the album's signature piece with its infectious Love Loop motif. This release marked one of Laws's most commercially successful efforts during his CTI period. The title track hit No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 8 on the Dance chart, No. 53 on the Hot Soul Singles chart, and No. 43 on the Easy Listening chart, while the album itself peaked at No. 42 on the Billboard 200, No. 2 on the Jazz chart, and No. 18 on the Soul LPs chart.
