About The Record:
The Oak Tree (12" Single), by Morris Day, is a maxi-single featuring extended mixes and versions of the funky dance track The Oak Tree, originally from his debut solo album Color of Success. The release captures Day's signature charismatic style and Minneapolis sound, following his departure from The Time amid a falling out with Prince. A unique highlight is the song's accompanying dance craze, inspired by Day observing his own quirky moves in a performance video and likening them to an oak tree spreading branches. Interestingly, Prince publicly mocked the dance during a live performance with Sheila E., jokingly suggesting to "chop down this Oak Tree," reflecting some lingering tension. The Oak Tree remains a fan-favorite for its upbeat, playful energy and became Day's biggest solo hit single, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
