About The Record:
Who? by Tony! Toni! Toné! marked the Oakland trio's debut, blending new jack swing with classic soul influences in a fresh way for late-1980s R&B. A unique aspect was the lead single Little Walter, which creatively reinterpreted the traditional spiritual Wade in the Water into a cautionary tale about a flashy roommate, drawing some criticism from gospel audiences for its use of the sacred melody. This album holds historical significance as the first major project produced by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, who soon after launched the successful girl group En Vogue. Fan-favorites include the upbeat Born Not to Know and the smooth For the Love of You, alongside the tender Baby Doll. Notably, Little Walter reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while three follow-up singles—Born Not to Know, Baby Doll, and For the Love of You—all landed in the Top 10 on the same chart.
