Upon its release, the album was a commercial success as it sold over half a million copies, and was certified Gold by the RIAA. The album was released in October 1989, reaching No. 39 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart, with singles I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson, which placed No. 23 on US R&B charts, and The Groove, which placed No. 70.
