About The Record:

Shadowdance, by Shadowfax, marked the band’s bold evolution from acoustic new-age roots into a vibrant fusion of jazz, rock, and world music infused with electronic elements and synthesizers. A unique highlight is the inclusion of rare instruments like the rare lyricon wind synthesizer played by Chuck Greenberg and intricate gamelan-inspired percussion, creating an ethereal yet rhythmic sound that stood out in the early-1980s landscape. The album is historically significant as one of the earliest releases to help define and popularize the emerging Windham Hill sound while simultaneously pushing beyond its typical acoustic boundaries. Fan-favorites include the shimmering title track Shadowdance, the dreamy New Electric India, and the energetic opener Brown Rice/Karmapa Chenno. Shadowdance became the band’s breakthrough commercial success, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and remaining in the Top 20 for over a year.
