About The Record:
Betwixt and Between by J and K, a collaboration between jazz trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, showcases their distinctive dual-trombone sound blended with creative big band arrangements that juxtapose classical snippets like Bach chorales with funk grooves, bossa nova, and pop covers for a lively transitional flow that gives the album its title. Recorded across multiple 1968-1969 sessions at Van Gelder Studios with notable guests including Airto Moreira on drums adding rhythmic vitality especially to Edu Lobo's Casa Forte, the project stands out for its eclectic mix of material ranging from Antonio Carlos Jobim's Mojave to seasonal fare like Little Drummer Boy and even Roger Kellaway's quirky Just A Funky Old Vegetable Bin. This approach bridges straight-ahead jazz with emerging lounge and crossover elements, making it one of the more intriguing and energetic entries in the duo's catalog that appeals to both traditional jazz enthusiasts and fans of sixties groove sounds. Fan favorites often include the title track Betwixt & Between along with the buoyant takes on Casa Forte and Mojave for their infectious grooves and inventive transitions.
