About The Record:
Schubert: Symphony in C Major (the Great), by Bruno Walter, is a renowned recording featuring the conductor leading the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in Franz Schubert's majestic final completed symphony, often celebrated for its grand scale and lyrical depth. This interpretation stands out as one of Walter's late-career stereo efforts, capturing his warm, humanistic approach to Schubert's music with a balance of energy and tenderness that many consider a classic of the repertoire. Historically significant as part of Walter's deep affinity for Viennese classics despite his exile from Austria, it exemplifies the post-war appreciation of Schubert's Great as a monumental work bridging classical and romantic eras. The symphony's four movements include a dramatic Andante introduction leading to an Allegro, a poignant Andante con moto, a lively Scherzo with trio, and a triumphant Allegro vivace finale, with the energetic Scherzo and the expansive finale often highlighted as fan-favorites for their rhythmic vitality and heroic character. No hit singles emerged from this classical orchestral album.
