The album marked the pinnacle of Lightfoot's acoustic folk-country blend before he embarked on an increasing use of electronic instruments, although he did include some electric guitar, notably on the title track. As for singles, the title track reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 (No. 1 AC, No. 13 Country), while \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eCarefree Highway\u003c\/span\u003e reached No. 10 on the Hot 100 (No. 1 AC, No. 81 Country). The song \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eSundown\u003c\/span\u003e's lyrics seem to describe a troubled romantic relationship, with the narrator recounting an affair with a \"hard-loving woman [who's] got me feeling mean.\" There are rumours that \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eSundown\u003c\/span\u003e was inspired by his then girlfriend, Cathy Smith, later more infamously known for her involvement in the death of John Belushi.
