About The Record:
Mathematics by Melissa Manchester, released in April 1985 by MCA Records, marked her first project after leaving Arista Records and embracing a synth-pop/new wave sound, a shift from her earlier singer-songwriter style. Produced by notable figures like George Duke, Brock Walsh, Robbie Nevil, and executive producer Quincy Jones, the album featured top session musicians but achieved limited commercial success, peaking at No. 144 on the Billboard 200. The title track, Mathematics, was the only single to chart, reaching No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Energy and Just One Lifetime failed to chart, though Energy had a music video. Historically significant as Manchester's only MCA album, it reflected the 1980s trend of singer-songwriters adapting to electronic pop, though it alienated some fans of her traditional sound.
