About The Record:

Chopin: Concerto No.1 in E Minor, by Dinu Lipatti, Recorded live in Geneva in February 1950 with conductor Otto Ackermann and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, just months before Lipatti's untimely death from Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 33, it exemplifies his signature purity of tone, technical mastery, and emotional depth in the concerto's dramatic Allegro maestoso, serene Larghetto romance, and vivacious Rondo finale. Historically significant as one of Lipatti's final performances, the recording captures a pivotal moment in classical music, reflecting his status as a Cortot protégé and a benchmark for Chopin interpretations amid post-WWII European revival. It also gained notoriety from an infamous "scandal" where EMI mistakenly released a 1950s recording by Halina Czerny-Stefańska under Lipatti's name in the 1960s and 1970s, only correcting it after listener outcry in 1981, highlighting archival challenges in the label's vaults. As a classical album, Chopin: Concerto No. 1 in E Minor contains no hit singles, though its movements remain staples in concert repertoires and recordings.
