About The Record:

Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition - Night On Bald Mountain by Eugene Ormandy, featuring the Philadelphia Orchestra, presents a vibrant orchestral interpretation of Modest Mussorgsky's iconic works, with Pictures at an Exhibition orchestrated in Lucien Cailliet's arrangement that Ormandy had commissioned earlier in his tenure, showcasing the ensemble's renowned lush sound and precision in depicting the vivid musical portraits inspired by Viktor Hartmann's artworks. The album pairs this suite with a dramatic rendition of Night on Bald Mountain, highlighting Ormandy's flair for colorful, dynamic Russian romanticism that made his Philadelphia recordings enduring favorites among classical listeners. A unique aspect lies in its representation of Ormandy's long-standing affinity for these pieces, building on his earlier 1937 premiere of the Cailliet orchestration, contributing to the work's popularity in orchestral repertoires beyond the more common Ravel version. Fan-favorites often include movements like The Great Gate of Kiev for its triumphant grandeur and Ballet of the Chicks in Their Shells for its whimsical charm, alongside the atmospheric intensity of Night on Bald Mountain. This release stands as a historically significant entry in the Philadelphia Orchestra's distinguished discography of Russian classics under Ormandy's direction.
