About The Record:

That the Spirit Needs, by Jose Feliciano, marks a shift from his earlier Latin pop style to a more rock and folk-infused sound, featuring a blend of original compositions and covers. The album includes notable tracks like a bossa nova-style rendition of Cat Stevens’ Wild World and covers of Elton John’s Border Song and Take Me to the Pilot, showcasing Feliciano’s versatile guitar work and emotive vocals. Produced by Feliciano and Janna Merlyn Feliciano, it emphasizes self-penned songs such as Come Down Jesus and The Spirit, reflecting a socially conscious tone. Despite critical praise for its fresh approach, the album did not achieve commercial success, partly due to poor promotion by RCA. It remains a compelling listen for fans of 1970s folk-pop and Feliciano’s evolving artistry.
