About The Record:
Prima Donna / Volume 3 by Leontyne Price, conducted by Edward Downes with the London Symphony Orchestra, is a collection of great soprano arias spanning from Gluck to Poulenc, featuring fifteen tracks that showcase Price's versatile voice across classical, romantic, and modern operatic repertoire, including pieces she rarely or never performed on stage, which adds a unique dimension to the series as a studio-focused exploration of soprano literature. This entry in the Prima Donna series stands out for its broad chronological range and inclusion of less commonly recorded arias, highlighting Price's interpretive depth and vocal splendor in works like Divinités du Styx from Gluck's Alceste and arias from Mozart, Verdi, and beyond. It earned historical recognition through a nomination for the 1971 Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Soloist Performance, underscoring its acclaim in the classical music world. Popular selections among listeners include standout renditions such as Non mi dir from Mozart's Don Giovanni and Come in quest'ora bruna from Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, cherished for Price's expressive phrasing and dramatic intensity. The album itself was a critical success in classical circles.
