In \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eThe Tempest,\u003c\/span\u003e Sullivan staked his claim to be considered as a contestant for eventual symphonic honours, and in the Introduction, the Overture to act IV, and the Prelude or Epilogue of Act V interlinked symphonic characteristics are to be discerned. In 1871 Charles Calvert invited Sullivan to compose music for his production of \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eThe Merchant of Venice.\u003c\/span\u003e Sullivan was prompt carrying out his commission and the results of his labors was entirely felicitous. As a consequence of early success, he was soon in demand as a purveyor of 'novelties' for the principal provincial Festivals. He was in the process of starting a work for the Norwich Festival of 1866 when his father died.
