About The Record:
The Uncollected 1944 by Johnny Mercer is a collection of radio transcriptions and studio performances from 1944 featuring Mercer singing with Paul Weston's Orchestra, offering a snapshot of the legendary lyricist and vocalist during the height of the swing era and World War II. These recordings capture Mercer performing a mix of standards and his own compositions in a relaxed, intimate setting typical of uncollected airchecks and broadcasts from that period, providing insight into the live sound of the time before many tracks were widely issued on commercial discs. Unique among Mercer's output, the album highlights his talents as both a charming interpreter of others' songs and a masterful deliverer of his witty, sophisticated lyrics, with tracks such as By the River Sainte Marie, Sugar, and Sweet Georgia Brown standing out as engaging performances that showcase his smooth delivery and jazz-inflected style. Fan-favorites often include upbeat numbers that reflect the optimistic yet resilient spirit of the 1940s, blending nostalgia with swing energy in a way that underscores Mercer's pivotal role in American popular music as a co-founder of Capitol Records and a prolific hitmaker.
