About The Record:

The Fantasticks: Original Cast Album released by MGM Records, captures the original off-Broadway production of the musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, which premiered at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in New York City. Featuring a small cast and minimalist orchestration, the album includes memorable performances by Jerry Orbach as El Gallo, Rita Gardner as Luisa, and Kenneth Nelson as Matt, bringing to life the allegorical story of two young lovers manipulated by their feuding fathers. Historically significant as the soundtrack to the world's longest-running musical, with a 42-year run and 17,162 performances, it became a cultural staple with over 11,000 productions worldwide by 2010. The album's standout hit single, Try to Remember, performed by Jerry Orbach, became widely covered by artists like Ed Ames and Harry Belafonte, achieving enduring popularity. Other notable songs include Soon It's Gonna Rain and They Were You, both covered by numerous artists, though they did not reach the same level of commercial success.
