About The Record:
The Pachelbel Canon and Other Baroque Favorites, by Boyd Neel, features the conductor leading the Toronto Chamber Orchestra in a collection of beloved Baroque works presented in digital sound for enhanced clarity and warmth. The program centers on Johann Pachelbel's iconic Canon in D Major as its centerpiece, alongside other favorites such as pieces by Corelli, J. S. Bach including Sheep May Safely Graze, and additional sinfonias and concertos that evoke the elegant spirit of the era. A unique aspect is its use of early digital recording technology, which brought superior fidelity to these timeless compositions during a time when such innovations were transforming classical music presentations. Historically, Boyd Neel was a pioneering figure in Baroque revival, having founded one of the first chamber orchestras dedicated to the repertoire decades earlier, making this album a late-career celebration of accessible yet refined interpretations. The title track remains the standout fan-favorite for its soothing, repetitive beauty that has long appealed to both classical enthusiasts and casual listeners alike.
