About The Record:

Applause by Lauren Bacall is a rare foray into recorded music by the legendary Broadway and film star, consisting of live recordings from her Tony Award-winning performance in the 1970 musical Applause, which itself was adapted from the classic film All About Eve. The album uniquely captures the electricity of her stage performances rather than studio takes, preserving Bacall’s spoken-singing style (she famously talked-sang many numbers because she was not a trained vocalist) alongside the original Broadway cast. Standout tracks and fan favorites include the brassy title song Applause, the wistful But Alive, the sardonic Welcome to the Theatre, and her dramatically delivered Something Greater. A notable historical highlight is that Bacall recorded the album while actually performing eight shows a week, with the orchestra and cast feeding off live audiences, making it one of the few major cast albums documented in genuine performance conditions. The show’s enormous success helped cement Bacall’s triumph as a musical-theater leading lady at age 45 after two decades away from Broadway.
