Nearly three decades after \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eBig Top Pee-Wee,\u003c\/span\u003e another new wave frontman-turned-film composer, Pee-Wee's Playhouse alumnus Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, was tapped to provide music for the third Pee-Wee installment, 2016's \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003ePee-Wee's Big Holiday.\u003c\/span\u003e Using Danny Elfman's work in the series as a template, Mothersbaugh employed atmospheric choir, mallet percussion, harp, and cymbals flesh out strings, brass, and woodwinds in the opening \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eMain Titles and Farewell.\u003c\/span\u003e Pulsing strings and brass underscore playful percussion, high-range woodwinds, and the rare appearance of a guitar on the brisk \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003ePee-Wee's Morning Routine.\u003c\/span\u003e The tone remains jolly on the jazzy \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eThe Diner\u003c\/span\u003e and on the western-infused \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eTraveling Salesman,\u003c\/span\u003e and becomes appropriately dramatic but never scary during scenes like \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eBank Robbery\u003c\/span\u003e and \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eEscape from Church.\u003c\/span\u003e \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eHallucinations\u003c\/span\u003e keeps things zany with Theremin. There's one song on the soundtrack -- \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eNew York,\u003c\/span\u003e a wry tribute to the city and perhaps to Bernstein-Comden-Green's \u003cspan style=\"font-style: italic ;\"\u003eNew York, New York\u003c\/span\u003e -- performed by Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman, with a responsive chorus (\"Madison Square Garden, it isn't square and it isn't a garden\").
