About The Record:

Beethoven: Symphonie Nr. 4, is part of the 1963 album cycle by the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Herbert von Karajan, released on Deutsche Grammophon. Recorded in March 1962 at Berlin’s Jesus-Christus-Kirche, the Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major, Op. 60, features a lively yet lyrical interpretation, highlighting Beethoven’s balance of classical elegance and emotional depth. Karajan’s precise direction, paired with the orchestra’s dynamic clarity, showcases the symphony’s spirited first movement and serene adagio, earning praise for its technical brilliance. The album, part of the landmark 1963 Beethoven cycle, was lauded for its clean, vibrant sound, with Günter Hermanns’ engineering enhancing the recording’s fidelity. Critics, including Gramophone’s 1963 review, hailed this cycle as a benchmark, with the Symphony No. 4 contributing to its commercial success, selling nearly one million box sets by 1973.
